A brief overview of the main changes for back end editors

TYPO3 v10 LTS (Long Term Support) is now available for toujou. Since the official release in April 2020 we have been running a full compatibility-check to ensure a smooth transition. Now all toujou clients can enjoy the latest version of TYPO3.

The latest updates to TYPO3 offer numerous innovations that editors will enjoy. With v10 the link structure is automatically updated allowing more effective SEO and there is an easy to use element search.

Along with these changes, TYPO3 has also included the latest technical adaptations to address data and privacy concerns (SameSite cookies), new PHP packages and a cache optimization that increases a pages’ loading speed. We have compiled a list of relevant changes for toujou customers and TYPO3 editors. For further information to the steps, click through our detailed TYPO3 and toujou tutorials.

Wizard – filter function

Now you can easily find the element that you are looking for with the filter function. The filter function aka the Wizard is a search field located above the element tabs. To find the element that you are looking for just enter the name in the Wizard and only the elements and tabs that match the search term will be displayed (e.g. »map«). You can also use the Wizard to filter elements by the content that you want them to display (e.g. »map«, »media«).

Slug updates and redirects

If you need to change the URL of a page all the subpages of that page will now be automatically updated with the new URL. The system will also automatically set up a redirect from the old to the new URL (status: 307). Once you have made the change a blue pop-up window will appear. If necessary, you can fix any changes needed in this window.

Page properties  Redirects

Step 1

Let’s choose a random multi-level navigation in your page tree. For our example

»Why«> »Why1«> »Why2« > »Why3«

Step 2

In the page properties of »Why1« we will change the page title from »Why1« to »Where«. By clicking the refresh button located at the far right to the URL segment the new path will be updated.

Step 3

If you go to a subpage of »Where«, you will see that the URL segment has been changed automatically in TYPO3.

Step 4

Once you’ve made the change a blue pop-up window will appear. If necessary, you can fix any changes in this window and cancel the automatic 307 redirect there.

Link handler

With this update, the ability to connect a telephone number has been simplified to be as easy as it is to connect pages, files and email. To generate a link in the front end to a telephone number, mark the respective text number in the rich editor text and click on the link button. The link browser will open as a new pop-up window (see screenshot). Enter the number in the phone number field in the Telephone tab which is at the far right. Please note notice: A valid phone number consists only of numbers and the character »+«.

Sitemap settings (only for SEO professionals!)

As you know the the »change frequency« and »priority« settings of a page are very important for search engine crawlers. Now they can be modified manually for both individual pages and the sitemap. Both of these functions have been added to the SEO tab but should only be edited by experienced SEO editors.

Yoast SEO  Page properties

Step 1

You can access the SEO tab via the page properties of the corresponding page. Once you are there, please just scroll to the bottom to find the sitemap field.

Step 2

In the sitemap field, you can enter the change frequency and priority of the respective page manually. This allows you to convey a better understanding of how to crawl this page to the search engine.

Quick access to »Hide in menu«

Now the »Hide in menu« option is easily accessible. First, right click the respective element in the page tree and then click on »More options«. This will cause the page to become invisible in the navigation tree of the front end.

Navigate the page tree without a mouse

By using the enter and arrow keys, you can easily move around in the page tree with your keyboard. To open the page tree you just need to use the tab and shift keys.

Create new forms

Now you can use existing templates that you’ve already customized with specific elements as new forms. This is a great time saver and also keeps your site looking cohesive. Of course, if you would like to create a new form from scratch that is still an option. The choice is yours.

Create forms

Step 1

When you click on the + icon at the left of the form name, a pop-up window will open. You can choose between a blank new form and a pre-existing one.

Step 2a

If you choose a pre-existing form, you will see a dropdown menu appaear with all the forms you've already created in the back end. By selecting one of these forms, a new selection of elements is not required.

Step 2b

Of course, you can decide to create a new form from scratch with any of the elements you like – and thus still be able to generate any new forms needed.

Dashboard

At the top of your module bar, the new Dashboard offers users a quick TYPO3 overview of the most important information. Here you will be able to find the latest in TYPO3 news or step-by-step instructions for the back end. Analysis widgets can also be created here, just click on the + icon in the lower right-handed corner.
