TYPO3 8 LTS and 9 LTS in comparison

The most important changes for back-end editors

In October 2018, a new major version of TYPO3 was released: TYPO3 V9 LTS (more info). In spring 2019, the update to the latest Long Term Support version was also implemented in toujou.

The new LTS version (overview of the support cycle of TYPO3 versions) offers improved usability functions in the back-end, improved security and data protection for users, new SEO options and much more in comparison to its predecessor.

In this blog post, we’ve listed the changes in back end handling for toujou customers and TYPO3 users.

New module to set up redirects

The new system extension »Redirects« offers a flexible handling of HTTP redirects. For this purpose, the new »Redirects« module is located in the higher-level »Site Management« menu, in which you create and manage redirects.

This is useful if the URL of a website has changed or short and precisely named URLs for campaigns or landing pages are generated.

8LTS version

The redirects were previously controlled via the List module.

9LTS version

The redirects can be managed and monitored in a stand-alone module.

Yoast SEO/SEO

Since TYPO3 now offers the back-end functions for SEO purposes out of the box, the previously summarized settings in the Yoast SEO tab have been dispersed into three tabs: »General«, »SEO« and »Social Media«.

8LTS – Yoast SEO

In the tab Yoast SEO simple handling of URLs and snippet editing were combined. It is only available for users of the Yoast extension.

Element selection

The selection of element groups used to appear within the workspace of each page. Now, it is displayed in a higher-level window. Instead of a list view, the elements arrange themselves into two blocks for a better overview.

8LTS version

Text elements as a list overview.

9LTS version

All text elements as a block display.

Save buttons

In the latest TYPO3 version, the buttons for saving your entries are no longer offered in a drop-down menu. Instead, TYPO3 has gone back to the direct display of all available buttons, which some users may remember from previous versions. For new items, the first three options are Close, Save, and View. For existing elements, the options New and Delete were added.

From now on, when checking your website within the back end, there are even more standard viewports to choose from. You can now easily switch between portrait and landscape format for flexible control of the responsive behaviour of the content.
